Project characteristics:
The newly-built three-level Łódź Fabryczna railway station is the key part of the new Łódź city centre. The construction of a multimodal underground station, the largest of this type of project
in Poland, which combined railway, bus, and city transport, lasted five years. On the first level, 8 meters underground, the main area of the station is located, which consists of a waiting room, ticket offices, commercial premises, as well as technical facilities. There is also a multi-station bus stop and a parking lot for cars and bicycles. On the second level, located 16.5 meter underground, the train station is located with four platforms and eight tracks. The new station is able to check up to 200 thousand passengers per day.
Marc-Kda smoke curtain:
– a system of automatic smoke curtains over the area of about 4800 m2, D60 class, ASB and ASB4 type
Marc-Kds smoke curtain:
– a system of fixed smoke curtains over the area of about 1700 m2
Gates closing other halls and technical rooms:
– double wing gates, EI 60 class
– curtain gates, El 60 class
– Marc-P sliding gates, EI 120 class
– inspection doors, EI 240 class
When designing passive fire protection, the following issues were taken into account:
– the nature of the new building
– the concept of the architect
– the need to ensure maximum safety and quick evacuation
– combined operation of the gates with other equipment
– installation of driving elements and secured against unauthorised access
– minimisation of the distances between the driving elements and the leaf to prevent it from falling out of guides
– the use of an emergency stop button and automatic limit switches
– limiting the closing speed to < 0.2 m/s
Characteristics:
The main problem regarding the railway station was the protection of escape routes by adequate smoke venting, including the limitation of smoke presence in the station in case of fire
in the tunnel. In order to achieve the best possible effect with this regard at the Łódź Fabryczna railway station, more than 1500 m of automatic Marc-Kda and fixed Marc-Kds smoke curtains were installed. The installation of the smoke curtain system ensured the control of the fire and smoke gas movement inside
the building, created an effective division of space into fire zones and smoke tanks. Thus, they ensured the possibility of evacuation and increased passenger safety, limiting
the spread of smoke. Throughout the entire Łódź Fabryczna railway station, 4800 m2 of Marc-Kda curtains and approximately 1700 m2 of Marc-Kds curtains was installed. On the –8 m level, MARC-Kda smoke curtains, D60 class, were installed at the train and bus station
in two types: ASB3 (gravitational) and ASB4 (power supplied with a UPS). On the –16 m level, due to the possibility of a train fire between platforms 1 and 2 or 3 and 4, smoke curtains were installed with a higher DH 60 class and with an adequate wind resistance class. A great challenge was posed by the installation of one of the curtains around the escalators at the bus station. Due to the lack of space for the automatic curtain mechanism, a smoke glass curtain was used instead.
The flexible structure of the curtain, the simple and easy-to-modify design, and the low self-weight allowed to match perfectly the design of the interior without the need to add additional solutions. The curtain system was installed in such a way so that it did not obscure the light source, the skylight B, and contributed to the optimum illumination of the station. Lack of dimensional constraints enabled the closing of very large areas with a modular curtain system – when the area around the escalators is closed, the length of one curtain is 40 m.
Each of the three levels of underground parking lots (in total approximately 1,000 parking places) was divided into 3 fire zones by MARC-P sliding fire protection gates with EI 60 and EI 120 fire resistance. The gates are kept in the opened position by connecting the electrical openers to the fire protection operational panel. The gate is closed by gravity. In the event of a fire alarm, the control system releases the electrical opener and the door leaf closes the passage between the fire zones. Emergency exit doors were installed in gate sections. The gates are opened manually.
